Our Students Succeed in All Areas of Academics

Our students receive extra help from tutors and mentors.

At St. Malachy School we have a history of high academic achievement. Many of our students qualify for academic scholarships. Some of the Catholic high schools our children attend include Christ the King, De La Salle, Loyola Academy, Fenwick, Holy Trinity, St. Ignatius, and Notre Dame. Some also attend selective enrollment public high schools such as Westinghouse, Phoenix Military Academy and Math and Science Schools. Our statistics show that St. Malachy graduates who finish at these college preparatory high schools are continuing on to college. Therefore, a high priority is placed on assuring that our graduates are enrolled in college preparatory high school programs.

All of our teaching staff has masters’ degrees or are enrolled in master degree programs in education. On a school average, our students score in the average percentile and above on the annual Terra Nova tests. Using this assessment data, we differentiate instruction according to the strengths and needs of our students so that every child succeeds.

Developing a love for reading is of the utmost importance at St. Malachy. Every year we participate in a school wide reading competition called Read to Win. Students strive to meet individual, class, and school wide reading goals. We have exceeded these goals since the program began. We also use the Accelerated Reading computer-based program in the classroom. Our teachers can evaluate and assess each student’s reading skills.

Using the Positive Behavior Intervention Strategy (PBIS), we have established a more positive learning environment. This is a program that rewards students for positive behavior around the school. As a result our students feel more focused and eager to learn.

Our students recite a pledge each day that commits them to a path of success. Each day their words ring out in every classroom to remind them that we are committed to values and expectations that will guarantee excellence and success. St. Malachy is a place “where we will make something of ourselves” when we use our talents to the best of our abilities.

No child is ever left behind at St. Malachy. A diagnostic staff from United Stand provides testing and counseling. Through the support of Title I Math and Reading during the day and after school, in addition to individual tutors and mentors, each child is given the extra help needed to address and remediate learning difficulties.
